Starting with only four interested people in 2002 under Peter Norman's leadership, this small organizing committee began with lots of ideas for creating a modern, reliable and efficient electronic communication system for retired education workers but with absolutely no money to put these ideas into effect. However, with help from the Ottawa Carleton District School Board and the National Capital Freenet, all the many obstacles to be faced were eventually overcome. The result is plain to see: over the years OPERA Online has become the essential electronic glue that binds our members together and keeps them informed of issues and events of interest.
OPERA Online is administered by a group of five volunteers, also known as 'The Gang'. Through daily online discussions and through regular face to face consultations as well, this group of five works to keep OPERA Online up and running all year round.
